Design guidelines for galvanized sheet metal parts.
Here you'll find important specifications on materials, coating thicknesses, suspension and further processing of galvanized sheet metal parts.
1. Available materials
Galvanizing is available exclusively for steel sheets. The process is not suitable for other materials such as aluminium or stainless steel.
2. Coating thicknesses & galvanizing options
Blexon offers two galvanizing processes with different coating thicknesses:
- Hot-dip galvanizing
Schichtdicke: 50–150 µm
Particularly robust and ideal for lasting corrosion protection outdoors.
Note: thin sheets (<4 mm) können sich unter Hitzeeinwirkung verziehen. Bei geschlossenen Bauteilen müssen Öffnungen vorgesehen werden, damit Luft entweichen und überschüssiges Zink abfließen kann.
- Electroplating
Schichtdicke: 5–20 µm
Suitable for thinner sheets or decorative applications, with lower Corrosion protection in heavily stressed outdoor areas.
3. Combination with powder coating
In principle, your sheet metal parts can be galvanized and powder-coated. This combination is however currently only possible with electroplating.
4. Combination with threads and extruded holes
Your sheet metal parts can also be fitted with threads or extruded holes and then galvanized. This combination is currently only possible with electroplating.
5. Cut-outs for suspension must be present
For galvanizing, the sheet metal parts are suspended on wires and immersed. This requires a cut-out, a hole, a thread, an extruded hole or a countersink of at least 4 mm diameter.
If your sheet metal part does not contain a suitable cut-out, the Blexon algorithm detects this and disables the option. Galvanizing without suspension may be possible, but usually involves higher costs. We cannot calculate these additional costs automatically. If at all possible, you should provide a suitable hole for suspension in your CAD model. If that is not possible, please get Contact in touch with us.
